Butterfly Summary October 2023

The month started with a warm and pleasant week, with a steady transition into autumn full of colour, interspersed with rain. However, as the end of the month came, Storm Babet was a reminder of the cold and turbulent weather that’s to come for the winter season.

As to be expected at this time of year, the records are of the hibernating species frantically taking on the last of the fuel needed to survive the winter.

On 12th, a few Red Admiral were seen around the silt lagoons. The observer stated six were counted, although this was during a period of couple of hours so some could have been repeat counts.  A Comma was observed in the Reserve car park.

The last report of the month, on 14th included a Speckled Wood on Flasks Lane, Red Admirals again on the buddleia by the Reserve dragonfly (dipping) pond. Finally, a late Comma rounds off this month’s report.
