January Community Work Day

Dead Hedging in the Woodland at Nosterfield Quarry

A dead hedge taking shape!

For our next community work day we will be dead hedging in the woodland near Flasks Fen. The brash and logs will be used to create dead hedges & log piles which will create homes for invertebrates, small mammals, birds and reptiles.

The work in the woodland has been carried out to open up densely planted areas and to create glades. This will offer a wider variety of habitats, encouraging woodland flora and greater biodiversity.

Tasks include using tools such as loppers and timber tongs to clear the piles of brash and logs, making stakes to retain hedges and adding cut brash into the dead hedges.
