Applications open for Assistant Reserves Warden role


The Lower Ure Conservation Trust manage Nosterfield Nature Reserve, a 100+ hectare wetland complex of aquifer-fed lakes, wet grassland, reedbed and species-rich fen. The reserve supports a wide range of breeding and wintering birds, aquatic plants and invertebrates. The reserve is particularly important for breeding waders and wetland birds, including species such as bittern.

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate to play a hands-on role in protecting and restoring one of North Yorkshire’s most important wetland nature reserves, including the creation of a large new wetland area at Nosterfield Quarry.

Working as part of a small team, the role will involve a wide variety of tasks including wetland habitat management, extensive wetland planting and protection of new planting, infrastructure maintenance, supporting volunteers, assisting with surveys and contributing to events and educational activities.

A passion for nature conservation and a strong work ethic are essential, along with good communication, organisational and IT skills. You must also have a driving license and be able to take up weekend / flexible working hours at particular times of year.

ROLE DETAILS

Closing date: 24/04/2026

Salary: £28,000 per annum (pro-rata)

Annual leave allowance: 20 days + bank holidays (pro-rata)

Commitment: 6 months full-time with potential to extend the contract subject to funding.

Start date: ASAP

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week. Working days will usually be Monday to Friday though occasional weekend or early morning work may be required to support events or surveys.

Location: Nosterfield Nature Reserve, Nosterfield Quarry, Bedale, North Yorkshire, DL8 2QZ, with occasional home working.

Essential: 18+, full driving license.

Probation period: 1 month

Additional information: Mileage in addition to the normal journey from home to the reserve will be paid at a rate of 45p per mile.
